According to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, however, a 2019 release date for Cyberpunk 2077 is absolutely not in the cards for this year.

With CD Projekt Red’s CFO saying that E3 2019 is the most important expo in the company’s history, fans can be forgiven for speculating that an upcoming release is in the cards. This year will mark the first time CD Projekt has booked space on the show floor for itself, which means those in attendance will presumably see a large, cyberpunk-themed display showing off the game. The Witcher 3 had previously been on the show floor in 2014, but that was through Warner Brothers. This time around, the floor space for Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt’s own investment from start to finish.

Gamers attending E3 2019 won’t be able to go hands-on with Cyberpunk 2077, but after last year’s 48-minute demonstration one can only assume that CD Projekt Red still has a thorough, closed-door demonstration to show off. Still, the lack of public-facing gameplay footage lends credence to Schreier’s comments that the game is still far from release-ready.

Perhaps worryingly, one anonymous former CD Projekt Red developer stated that there were numerous parallels between the development of Anthem and Cyberpunk 2o77. With the former having had one of the worst video game launches of all the time, fans can only hope CD Projekt Red releases the game whenever it’s truly ready.

Of course, while Jason Schreier is a knowledgeable journalist, he’s not an official source speaking on behalf of the developers. CD Projekt hasn’t offered a release date for Cyberpunk 2077 as of yet, though perhaps that’s one of the items that will be revealed in Los Angeles two weeks from now.

When the massive game does eventually release it won’t support fan-made modifications at launch, though this may change after its release date. Given its alluring cyberpunk setting, it’s a safe bet to say that there’ll be no shortage of fan-made content for Cyberpunk 2077 if mod support ever arrives.

Before that can happen, of course, fans will need a firm release date. Whatever happens at E3 2019, expect Cyberpunk 2077 to make waves.
