Speaking to PCGamesN, Cyberpunk 2077 Level Designer Max Pears stated that players did sometimes default to violent behavior, otherwise known as “GTA Mode,” but they may not be tempted to after realizing how many options they have in the game. “Once you start to play the missions and see the amount of options you have, I think that will make players stop and think a little bit before doing something reckless,” Pears said.

Pears went on to say that developers have witnessed people “adjust how they play” as they progress through Cyberpunk 2077. The game will be densely packed with things to do and see, and while Pears didn’t elaborate on exactly what caused players to change their behavior, it seems safe to say that the world feeling lived-in — with Cyberpunk 2077 containing over 1,000 NPCs — will have an effect on how players interact with it.

Earlier today, Cyberpunk 2077 revealed new gameplay and details in its first Night City wire, with more to come in the future. CD Projekt Red has steadily been peeling back the layers of the game, offering better looks at what awaits players when the game launches. While Pears said it was “fine” if players want to go on those violent rampages, creating a reluctance to do so is quite the design feat, considering how players typically act in similar games.

There’s a very large emphasis on player choice in Cyberpunk 2077, and while the game won’t have a morality system, being able to shape the story to a player’s choices is bound to create closer connections with the protagonist, whether they decide to enjoy the world or watch it burn. However, players overwhelmingly chose Paragon in Mass Effect, and if Cyberpunk 2077’s styles its narrative in a similar way, it may explain why players don’t want to go crazy.

Of course, that will all come down to the individual playing, but if what Pears says is true, it could radically change how narrative-driven open-world games are approached in the future.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on November 19, 2020, for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
