2022 was Cyberpunk 2077’s year of redemption, as CD Projekt Red’s once immensely anticipated open-world role-playing game was dragged from potential obscurity by consistent updates and a phenomenal anime adaptation. Cyberpunk Edgerunners arrived on Netflix earlier this year and became an instant rival to Arcane for Best Adaptation at The Game Awards. Alongside an update inspired by the anime which introduced iconic weaponry and gear from it, Cyberpunk 2077 skyrocketed in popularity and successfully translated cultural dominance into players. For two years prior, Cyberpunk 2077 had continued to be developed and saw new content, performance enhancements, and an expansion announced around the same time as Cyberpunk Edgerunners came out.

Going into the New Year, the future looks bright for Cyberpunk 2077, but some want a cherry sprinkled on top this Christmas with a happier conclusion to the tragedy that is Cyberpunk Edgerunners. A Reddit post by Olampix shows Santa coming in through the window to discover someone’s wish. It reads “a happier ending for cyberpunk edgerunners,” prompting Santa to take out a gun, begin to cry, and smother the innocent soul with his bag of gifts.

The Redditor captioned the post “sorry but no copium,” refusing thousands who wished for a better outcome. Beloved characters die and promises are forcibly broken in the final episode, events that inspired players to violently seek revenge on the perpetrators who still live in Night City. Cyberpunk Edgerunners takes place approximately a year before the actions of V and Johnny Silverhand, meaning that it was easy for players to discover locations and characters that feature in the anime.

However, Cyberpunk 2077 fans can still look forward to the Phantom Liberty expansion due to release next year which is due to see Keanu Reeves return as Johnny Silverhand. Furthermore, it was revealed during The Game Awards with a second trailer for the expansion that Idris Elba would be making his way to Night City, voicing a mysterious FIA agent named Solomon Reed. As well as a sequel confirmed to be in development, there is a lot to be excited about for Cyberpunk 2077, even if the anime’s ending cannot be changed.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
