Images of a custom Gears 5 Xbox One controller have been posted online by Twitter user Idle Sloth, who claims to be an Xbox insider. The photos look legitimate, though we must caution that it is possible for them to be fake. At any rate, the controller will be sticking pretty close to the general look of Gears 5’s box art, with a heavy emphasis on grey over any flashy color schemes.

There are a couple of symbols on the Gears 5 Xbox One controller that are of some significance to fans. On the front appears to be a slightly modified COG logo, and on the back is the symbol of Locust Queen Myrrah. The Locust Queen symbol on the back of the controller is of particular interest, as the symbol will play a significant role in Gears 5’s story if the ending of Gears of War 4 is any indication.

Those who have yet to complete Gears of War 4 should be wary of SPOILERS as we explain what the Locust Queen’s symbol means to the franchise’s lore. Basically, at the end of Gears of War 4, Kait Diaz inherits her mother’s amulet, which is revealed to be the Locust Queen’s symbol, implying that Kait herself is the granddaughter of the Locust Queen.

It’s clear by the Gears 5 story trailers and other pre-release promotional work that this revelation will play a huge role in the upcoming Gears 5. Since the symbol is such a big deal for the franchise’s story moving forward, it’s fitting that it’s displayed prominently on the custom Gears 5 Xbox One controller (assuming the controller is real and not just a convincing fake, of course).

As for when fans can expect this custom Gears 5 Xbox One controller to launch, it’s a safe bet that it will be available either on Gears 5’s launch day or sometime before then, so fans will just have to stay tuned for more information.

Gears 5 launches on September 10 for PC and Xbox One.
